British defence worker jailed for espionage

LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - A defence worker who tried to sell British military secrets to the Russians, including details of new "Storm Shadow" cruise missiles being used in Iraq, was jailed for 10 years on Friday for espionage.
The Old Bailey court in London was told that Ian Parr, 45, an engineer with BAE Systems, offered "highly classified and restricted" material worth several million pounds to undercover agents posing as Russian buyers.
Prosecutor Aftab Jafferjee told the court the missile project had been described by the Ministry of Defence as the "biggest single improvement in (Royal Air Force) strike capablility for the foreseeable future".
"This demonstrates the damaging consequences of compromising such classified information about the operational effectiveness of British forces currently engaged in the war in Iraq," Jafferjee said.
Judge Michael Hyam told Parr he had committed a serious breach of trust which was purely motivated by money and had put national security at risk.
"A substantial sentence must be passed to reflect the public abhorrence at such acts which betray the safety and interests of the state."
The Storm Shadow project was launched in 1997, but production of the missiles only began in March last year. They have since been fitted to Typhoon and Tornado aircraft operating in the Gulf.
Parr, who admitted the nine charges of spying and theft, was arrested last year following a sting operation by police and secret service agents acting on a tip-off.
An undercover officer pretending to be a Russian called Aleksei contacted Parr, who gave himself the codename "Piglet" and offered to sell information to the agent for 130,000 pounds.
Parr had also offered to hand over details of seven other military projects developed by his employers but which were not classified.
The judge said that eight years of his sentence was for the Storm Shadow betrayal and the other two years was for his other offences.
After his arrest, Parr told police he decided to sell the secrets after learning that he could be made redundant from his job.
