Iraq Says Destroys U.S. Tanks at Baghdad Airport

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq said its forces had destroyed 11 U.S. tanks and eight armored personnel carriers during fighting Friday at Baghdad's international airport, which the United States says it now controls.
The Iraqi military said in a statement that fighting still raged in the early evening at the airport, about 12 miles from the capital, and vowed to defeat the invaders.

Elite Republican Guard and Fedayeen paramilitaries "have sworn to inflict defeat on the enemy and to teach them a lesson whereby they will know what kind of men we are," the Iraqi statement said.

It said Iraqi forces had destroyed seven more U.S. and British tanks and five armored personnel carriers in other parts of the country over the past 24 hours. They also shot down a U.S. helicopter, it said.

The Iraqi military said later its forces had destroyed an additional four armored personnel carriers and two armored vehicles in southern Iraq overnight and during Friday.

The military said they had also shot down a jet fighter over Basra, Iraq's second city which has been under siege from British forces for about two weeks.

Iraqi television showed what it said was new footage of destroyed military equipment belonging to the invading forces.
