'NERVE AGENTS FOUND'
US forces say they may have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
They said preliminary tests on substances found at a military complex near Karbala showed levels of nerve and blister
agents.
Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division discovered the substances at an Iraqi training camp in Albu Mahawish.
The camp is on the Euphrates river between the central Iraqi cities of Karbala and Hilla, site of ancient Babylon.
They said they also found gas masks and chemical suits at the military complex.
Major Michael Hamlet told Reuters that initial investigations of 14 barrels found in the camp revealed levels of nerve
agents sarin and tabun, and the blister agent lewisite.
He said the find could be the "smoking gun" which proved US and British accusations that Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein had been hiding banned weapons of mass destruction.
"If tests from our experts confirm this, this could be the smoking gun. It would prove he has the weapons we have
said he has all along," Hamlet said. "But right now we just don't know."
Samples are now expected to be taken to the US for further tests.
Meanwhile, a separate facility near Baghdad has been cleared of containing chemical weapons.
Initial tests had reportedly detected traces of nerve agent sarin after US soldiers guarding the facility near Hindiyah,
60 miles south of Baghdad, became ill.
US officials said further tests showed the substance was pesticide.
