Hoon: we will find Iraqi WMD

The defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, today brushed aside worries that coalition forces had yet to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq.
Answering questions from MPs on day 19 of the conflict, Mr Hoon claimed that the regime "may have removed some of its WMD but I have no doubt we will find them".
He conceded, however, that "obvious sites have been looked at" without success so far. He added: "We continue to search those areas already secured."
Put on the spot as to whether a lack of such WMD would affect the legality of the war, Mr Hoon merely insisted: "As I've made clear, we will find weapons of mass destruction."
Making an assessment of the war so far, Mr Hoon appeared to step back slightly from earlier guarantees by the foreign secretary, Jack Straw, that the UK would not contemplate attacks on Syria or Iran.
Last week Mr Straw said it was "not true" that either country was "next in line" after Iraq.
Today, asked by MPs if the US might turn its attentions to Iraq's neighbours after defeating Saddam Hussein, Mr Hoon said merely that he was "not aware of any such contemplation".
He added: "I have made it clear that action against Iraq was unique."
Tony Blair, however, assured Syria today that he opposed "targeting" the Arab state.
Mr Blair gave the assurance in a telephone call to the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the official Syrian news agency, SANA, said. They spoke just hours before Blair was to hold talks with the US president, George Bush, expected to be dominated by the conflict.
"Mr Blair explained that Britain disagrees completely with those who promote the targeting of Syria," the agency said.
Mr Hoon, who also gave a press conference at the ministry of defence this morning, said he was not yet in a position to confirm whether missile attacks from Iraq had been either Scud or al-Samoud missiles, but that said the bombs "did not travel in excess of UN resolutions".
In a tacit admission that TV and radio stations in Iraq had been targeted, Mr Hoon said such transmitters had been "addressed" and that "very little broadcasting [is] reaching [the] people of Iraq".
He also confirmed rumours of looting within Iraq, but joked that this "appears to be confined to Iraqi citizens liberating items of those people in charge of the regime". He called such actions "good practice".
The defence secretary also appeared to suggest that the port of Umm Qasr was still not fully functioning, saying that the Royal Navy wanted to "widen channels and a new berth", but that this was hampered by the "continued threat of mines".
Previously the port had been declared safe and free of mines.
Mr Hoon revealed that the British army had today begun to investigate the 200 or so wooden coffins found in a warehouse in southern Iraq, but resisted the urging of MPs to call the scene a war crime.
On the controversial question of cluster bombs, Mr Hoon said that a "careful note was taken of when and where" such devices were used.
He also said it would "take time for the Iraqi people to adjust to the new circumstances", but told the Commons that coalition forces now have access to all parts of Basra and that soldiers were being "warmly received by crowds of local people."
Mr Hoon said the coalition was "winning the confidence and support of the Iraqi population" in Basra. He said US forces now controlled all major routes into and out of Baghdad.
The defence secretary said there was a "beginning of a return to normal life in southern Iraq", with civilians taking control of their own affairs and shops and markets reopening.
