Republican Guard drives at U.S. troops

CENTRAL IRAQ (CNN) -- A large line of Republican Guard troops sped out of Baghdad Wednesday on an apparent collision course with the lead element of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army officers told CNN.

The Iraqi troops -- reportedly in more than 1,000 armored vehicles -- was reported to be moving rapidly toward Najaf, the scene of an earlier battle with U.S. forces, despite a heavy sandstorm, according to officers from the 3rd Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry, the reconnaissance unit of the 3rd Division.

U.S. commanders were calling in airstrikes to slow the Iraqi advance. But since bad weather was hindering air cover, Army sources said they said they expected to come under attack Wednesday night.

CNN's Walter Rodgers, accompanying the 3-7th Cavalry, said officers told him the column from Baghdad was likely heading south at a rate of 18 mph to 36 mph to try to retake a key bridge over the Euphrates River.

Cavalry troops fought a fierce battle with Iraqi troops Tuesday in the Euphrates Valley east of Najaf, a Shiite Muslim shrine city about 95 miles south of Baghdad. Pentagon officials said about 300 Iraqi soldiers were killed in that engagement.
